Hilti introduces semi-autonomous robot for ceiling drilling

By On-Site Staff

A new, semi-autonomous, BIM-enabled robot will let mechanical, electric and plumbing contractors complete ceiling drilling work without ever leaving the ground.

Tool maker Hilti Group introduced its latest innovation and first construction robot, known as Jaibot, Oct. 28.

“We looked at which routine work on the construction site is among the most stressful, and that is primarily overhead work,” Julia Zanona, product manager for Hilti Robotics, said in a release. “From the beginning, it was important to us to develop a robotic solution that supports our customers where it is most needed. The Hilti Jaibot takes over the most strenuous and exhausting tasks, working alongside the installation team.”

Using building information modelling, the robot is able to identify its location, drill holes overhead in the correct spot and mark them appropriately for trades workers.

Along with eliminating a repetitive and often strenuous task for contractors, Hilti said the robot will help improve job site productivity.
